Olympian David Torrence Dies at 31

Malibu resident David Torrence, 31, an Olympic runner, was found dead Monday morning, August 28, in a swimming pool in Scottsdale, Arizona. Police confirmed that there were "no obvious signs of foul play".

Torrence, who was born in Okinawa, Japan and raised in southern California, had landed in Arizona a few weeks earlier for training.

An Olympic track athlete has been found dead in a swimming pool in the U.S.

Torrence began his career competing for the USA, and held the national record for the indoor 1000m, which he set in 2014 and still stands.

Fellow athletes paid tributes to Torrence.

The Olympic runner holds an American record in the 1,000-meter run and a world record in the 3,200 relay.

"He competed for Peru (birth place of his mother) in the 2016 International Olympics in Rio", the Rotary newsletter notes.

Torrence was nationalized in Peru past year.

Gabriele Grunewald, the former national indoor champion in the 3,000-meter who represented the U.S.at the 2014 world indoor championships, tweeted, "I am absolutely broken hearing about David Torrence".
