North Korea missile threat: USA diplomatic efforts failed, Fmr. Navy SEAL says

A day after North Korea fired ballistic missiles into the East Sea over Japan, the United States conducted a successful missile defence test off the coast of Hawaii.

The missile was launched from the Pacific Missile Range Facility on Kauai, Hawaii.

"Earlier this year, our customer requested an enhanced capability to deal with a sophisticated medium-range ballistic missile threat", said Mike Campisi, Raytheon's SM-6 senior program director.

Guided-missile destroyers such as the John Paul Jones could be used to intercept a North Korean missile from locations in the Sea of Japan and elsewhere in the Pacific.

North Korea's most recent missile test on Tuesday prompted the Japanese government to tell residents to take cover.

The test, called Flight Test Standard Missile- 27 Event 2 (FTM-27 E2), demonstrated the integrated capabilities of the Aegis Weapon System and how it has continually evolved to counter advanced threats.

"North Korea's reckless violation of its neighbours' territorial sovereignty and its direct threat to Japan's citizens have threatened both regional and worldwide peace and security", she said.

Last week, the House of Commons defence committee held a rare summer sitting to discuss the North Korea situation and to discuss whether Canada should consider joining the US ballistic missile defence shield for North America. The military has conducted three tests in total, but during a test in June, the interceptor failed as a result of human error.

In May, the US, in the first test of its ground-based intercept system at Vandenberg Air Force Base in California, intercepted an intercontinental ballistic missile launched from the Ronald Reagan Ballistic Missile Defense Test Site on Kwajalein Atoll in the Marshall Islands, which is 4,200 miles away.

The August 30 test launch was the third time that the Standard Missile-6 successfully engaged a ballistic missile target in its terminal phase.
