New Hampshire hospital evacuates emergency, operating rooms due to mysterious odor

A New Hampshire hospital's emergency department has been evacuated because an unknown odor was detected.

Tweets from Exeter Professional Firefighters say crews were dispatched to Exeter Hospital for an odor investigation in the emergency room.

A hospital spokeswoman told the Union Leader that staff and patients began complaining of dizziness and nausea around 11:15 a.m.

"At this time we still have not been able to identify the cause, but obviously we're working diligently to do that", Vasapolli said.

Other staff members in the hospital's operating room later became ill, she said. The Epping Fire Department was sent to check out the area for carbon monoxide, but the exact cause was not confirmed Friday afternoon.

'Most experienced only minor symptoms and received supportive treatment, ' it said. Some of the patients were transferred to other hospitals in the area.

"We are working with the local fire and police departments and we're now transferring patients", she said shortly before 12:30 p.m.

"We're looking at cleaning fluids that could have been used in the hospital, obviously, the rumor got out that it's anesthesia gas, we don't know that", Exeter Assistant Fire Chief Eric Wilking said.
