Microsoft Surface Has Lots of Reliability Issues, Claims Consumer Reports

At the heart of the issue is "poor predicted reliability" according to Consumer Reports, which says it has concerns as to how the Microsoft notebooks and tablets will hold up in comparison to rival hardware.

In its polling, Consumer Reports said that roughly 25 percent of Surface tablet PCs will have breakage problems within its first two years.

For Consumer Reports, it's not the first time the outlet has made waves with a major hardware company.

For its part, Microsoft does refute the findings, not that we would expect them to say anything different, and says that their return and support rates differ from the findings in the Consumer Report Survey.

The spokesperson added that "Microsoft Surface Pro is designed and built with performance and reliability in mind" but has not yet clarified the "reliability improvements" made within the past two or three years.

Microsoft also pointed out that the Surface Pro, for example, received high performance and versatility marks in Consumer Reports' laptop lab evaluations.

Mazda to produce electric cars together
The sheer cost of the plant also makes a partnership logical, as it boosts cost-efficiency and economies of scale. Mazda will make cross-over models there that it plans to introduce to that market, the companies said .

This decision specifically deals with Microsoft devices with detachable keyboards, such as the new Surface Pro released in June and the Surface Book, as well as the company's Surface Laptops with conventional clamshell designs.

What's hugely important to point out here is that Consumer Reports' retraction of its recommendation appears entirely dependent upon subscriber survey answers. "And our brand reliability findings have proven to be quite dependable over the years".

Though it shouldn't go down without a fight, Microsoft is up against some pretty stiff competition with this Consumer Reports study.

Some survey respondents said they experienced problems with their devices during startup while others commented that their systems froze or shut down unexpectedly.

Consumer Reports also said that it "cannot recommend any other Microsoft laptops or tablets" due to reliability issues. Predicted reliability is a projection of how new models from each brand will fare, based on data from models already in users' hands.

This retraction does not appear to be based on actual testing from within the Consumer Report labs.
