Kenyan President Wins Re-Election. But Will Opposition Concede?

Uhuru was announced the victor by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) after garnering 8,203, 290 votes, a 54.27% representation of all the votes cast, against his closest challenger, Raila Odinga, who received 6,762,224 votes, a 44.74% representation of the votes cast.

Raila Odinga is refusing to accept his likely loss in the 8 August presidential election, as he did in 1997, 2007 and 2013, because he claims the vote has been rigged against him.

The results from 17 of the East African nation's 290 constituencies still needed to be verified by midday on Friday, said electoral commission chairman Wafula Chebukati.

Worldwide observers on Thursday gave the thumbs-up to the election, and USA ambassador Robert Godec issued a statement on behalf of the diplomatic community calling for the election commission to be given time to complete its work.

Earlier, Mr Odinga's supporters said he had won, and published their own figures.

The dispute has raised fears among Kenyans of ethnic and political clashes of the kind seen in 2007, when 1,200 people were killed. "I therefore wish to declare Uhuru Kenyatta.as President-elect", said Mr Chebukati.

As Kenyatta held a strong lead in provisional results with 96 percent of all polling stations counted, the election commission defended the voting system as secure, saying there were "no interferences before, during and after" Tuesday's election.

"If anything was electronically fiddled with, there is a way to go back and absolutely ascertain what happened in the polling station", he said.

"We appeal for peace, non-violence and dialogue as the eyes of the world is on Kenya and we can't do better than to show that electorally, Kenya has come of age".

"We don't want to fight", said driver Evans Omondi, 28, wearing a polo shirt and jeans.

The opposition calls the vote a "charade" and says going to court to challenge it isn't an option.

One of the leaders of the opposition Nasa alliance, Musalia Mudavadi, said before the results announcement that its concerns about the poll had not been adequately addressed.

Uhuru, who is the sitting President of the Republic of Kenya, was declared victor together with his running mate William Ruto despite contests by the opposition that the election had been rigged. Without having all these forms to present to the public, the IEBC has had to admit that the results it has been announcing since Wednesay are unofficial.

Angry protests had erupted in opposition strongholds in Nairobi and the western city of Kisumu, an opposition stronghold on Wednesday, with demonstrators burning tyres in the streets. The Kenyan election commission has disputed his claims that its database was hacked and results were manipulated in favor of President Uhuru Kenyatta, who seeks a second term.

Many Kenyans have left Nairobi in recent days, bracing for violence.

Already, though, tensions have boiled over into violence in some of the slums of Nairobi. One person was killed by a machete-wielding gang that attacked a tally center in coastal Tana River county, and police shot dead two of the assailants.
