As a result of the snafu, Pfau ended up dedicating the last 50 years of her life to fighting leprosy in Pakistan.

Not required to take the veil or live in seclusion, she ended up in Pakistan by chance.

The Marie Adelaide Leprosy Center is the first private leprosy center in Pakistan. By 1996, the World Health Organization declared that leprosy had been controlled in Pakistan. With the partnership of the Pakistani government, Pfau developed the country's National Leprosy Control Programme and extended her efforts to include treatments for blindness and tuberculosis.

And she received a number of honors, including, in 1979, Pakistan's second highest civilian award: the Hilal-e-Imtiaz; in 1989 she received the Hilal-e-Pakistan and the German Staufer Medal in 2015. The order sent her to India, but she became stuck in Karachi because of a visa issue.

Later she joined a Catholic order and eventually came to Pakistan in 1960. "We owe u a debt of gratitude Dr Ruth Pfau".

Pakistani senator Sherry Rehman wrote: "She came to Pakistan 56 years ago and spent her life looking after the diseased and dispossessed". She didn't confine her endeavors to treating leprosy patients but at the same time was of colossal help when Sindh confronted serious flooding.
