Detroit Lions, Matthew Stafford agree to massive $135 million extension

The Lions announced a new five-year deal for Stafford, keeping him with the team through to the 2022 season.

ESPN reported the contract included a signing bonus of $50 million and $92 million in guaranteed payments beyond that.

Last year, Stafford threw for 4,327 yards, 24 touchdowns and 10 interceptions while also leading the Lions' to an unbelievable eight fourth quarter comebacks.

Stafford has already become a top-50 quarterback, statistically, in National Football League history, ranking No. 39 in completions, No. 47 in attempts, No. 44 in yards, No. 49 in touchdowns and No. 23 in passer rating. Drew Brees and Kirk Cousins are both pending free agents, and a bidding war for their services could drive their price tags north of Stafford's $27 million average per season.

In eight seasons with the Lions, Stafford has passed for 30,303 yards and 187 touchdowns in 109 games. Next, he became the top overall pick in the NFL Draft in 2009. Not only has he led Detroit to two playoff berths in the past three years, but he's arguably been one of the best clutch quarterbacks in the NFL. He has passed for 4,000 yards or more in the past six seasons, but the Lions' three post-season games during his tenure have all been losses. He will be 34 in December, so giving him a five-year extension would keep him under contract through his 41st birthday. Stafford has another factor in his history that helped make his new long term deal attractive to ownership: the quarterback hasn't missed a game since 2011.
