US, Iranian navies encounter again in Persian Gulf

There have been sporadic clashes between USA and Iranian forces in the Persian Gulf in recent months, usually involving IRGC forces, which are separate from the Iranian military and report only to Iran's supreme leader.

The American aircraft carrier and its accompanying warship left the area afterwards, it added.

"The US warships in a provocative and unprofessional move began firing warning shots at the Iranian vessels, to which the IRGC Navy's ships paid no attention and continued with their mission".

In an earlier incident in January, the USS Mahan destroyer fired warning shots at four Iranian Revolutionary Guard vessels that approached at high speed in the Gulf's Strait of Hormuz. A similar incident involving the USA and Iran took place in the region on Tuesday.

A U.S. Navy ship Tuesday fired warning shots at an Iranian vessel that had come too close during a military exercise in the region, the U.S. Navy said.

USA military vessels have had approximately 60 unsafe interactions with Iranian ships in the Gulf since 2015, according to US military records.

On Friday, the US, France, Germany and Britain, who brokered the deal with Iran along with China, Russia and the European Union, said they were raising concerns with the United Nations over Iran's launch on Thursday of a satellite-carrying rocket.
