Strangers Form 'human Chain' To Save Drowning Family

More than 80 percent of rescues by beach lifeguards are the result of swimmers who are stuck in the rip currents.

'I honestly thought I was going to lose my family that day, ' Ursrey told the Panama City News Herald. "It was like 'Oh my God, this is how I'm going".

A family stuck in a rip current narrowly avoided a tragedy when a crowd of strangers linked together to bring them back to land.

"I can hold my breath underwater and go around an olympic pool easily", she said.

"I was calm because I KNEW they was coming out alive. So I went down to tell them to come in and all I heard was my 2 boys screaming and crying (sic)", she wrote in a post which she shared on gofundme.com, wherein she is collecting funds for the treatment of her mother who suffered a heart attack in the water. They had all the tools to help a drowning victim, she said. I found them way out in the water.

"I blacked out because I couldn't do it anymore", she told The Post. At first, she thought people on the beach were pointing at a shark-but she realized that it was actually people trapped in a rip tide.

Roberta Ursey said her mother suffered a heart attack during the ordeal. Jessica said that all nine people who were drowning were thankfully saved by the efforts of nearly 80 strangers.

Beachgoers saw the family struggling to get out of the current, so they formed a chain. Suddenly, the woman noticed that her sons were swimming too far from the shore.

Roberta Ursrey and her family were enjoying themselves in the sea on Saturday, despite the yellow-flag conditions. "It was unbelievable and heart warming to see", she continued.

Both strong swimmers, Simmons and her husband were comfortable paddling out to save the Ursreys and others, but there is strength in numbers. Then, swim parallel to the beach until you are out of the way.

Charlie Paxton, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Tampa who has studied rip currents throughout the USA, said Florida has the highest number of rip current-related deaths because it is a vacation hot spot, with a lengthy coastline and warm waters.

The boys had gotten stuck in a rip current, which is a strong but narrow current that flows away from the beach and can exceed more than 6 miles per hour, which is faster than an Olympic swimmer and can extend the length of a football field off the coast.

An estimated 70 people came together to help rescue a Florida family caught in a riptide.

Almost an hour later, the human chain had helped carry all 10 swimmer back to the land.
