Saudi-led coalition gives Qatar 2 more days to meet demands

They are now demanding that Qatar shut Al Jazeera, close down a Turkish military base in Doha and curb ties with Iran, among other things.

The Saudi-led coalition had earlier threatened to impose more sanctions on Qatar if Doha did not meet the demands.

The four countries indicated in their statement that they would study and evaluate Qatar's response before delivering their own reply to Kuwait.

Qatari foreign minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani was received by Kuwait's Emir Sheikh Sabah Al Ahmad Al Sabah on Monday to deliver a handwritten letter from Qatari Emir Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, according to state-run Kuwait News Agency.

The GCC - made up of Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Bahrain, Qatar, Kuwait and Oman - could also extend trade penalties to include countries and companies dealing with Qatar, Al-Arabiya added.

Saudi Arabia and three other Arab states which spearheaded a diplomatic campaign against Qatar have extended the deadline for Doha to accept their demands.

Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, the United Arab Emirates and Egypt had demanded that 13 points be accepted by a set deadline, but hardly "bargaining" points.

Foreign ministers of Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain and United Arab Emirates are expected to meet on 5 July in Cairo to discuss the latest developments on relations with Qatar, the Egyptian foreign ministry said in an emailed statement.

Qatar has called the charges baseless and says the demands, including closing Qatar-based al Jazeera TV and ejecting Turkish troops based there, are so severe that they seem meant to be rejected. Further demands insist that Qatar cut ties with all "terrorist organizations", including the Muslim Brotherhood and Lebanon's Hezbollah.

"To those who demand that Al Jazeera be shut down and that people's right to the truth be suppressed, we too have demands", said key Al Jazeera presenters and reporters.

Qatar, shunned by Gulf neighbours over its support to terror, may have to face more action as the deadline for meeting their demands expired on Sunday.

Qatar has called the conditions impossible and urged for their revision.

Trump spoke separately on Sunday with the Saudi king, Abu Dhabi's crown prince and the Qatar emir on his concerns over the dispute and "reiterated the importance of stopping terrorist financing", the White House said.
