Reince Priebus: Trump 'wanted to go a different direction'

President Trump has ousted his White House chief of staff Reince Priebus and named his homeland security secretary, retired Marine Corps Gen. John Kelly, to replace him, the president announced on Twitter Friday afternoon.

"He is a Great American. and a Great Leader".

Even before joining Trump's cabinet as secretary of Homeland Security, Kelly was Trumpian in his own way. So I'm happy for him.

Trump's comments were met with laughter from his law enforcement audience, but quickly came under broad criticism for their apparent endorsement of police brutality."Law enforcement officers are trained to treat all individuals, whether they are a complainant, suspect, or defendant, with dignity and respect", said a statement from the International Association of Chiefs of Police. "He has been a true star of my Administration", Trump said. He also thanked Priebus for "service and dedication to his country". He added: "We accomplished a lot together and I am proud of him".

Several administration positions that were usually managed by the chief of staff now reported directly to Mr Trump.

Trump hired Anthony Scaramucci over Priebus's objections and Scaramucci reports directly to the president.

Reports surfaced Monday that Whitehead had been charged with that crime and with missing a related court date on July 6. Whitehead even told Scout.com's Mike Fisher that he wasn't even in the state of Virginia at the time of the incident.

But then there were rumblings Mr Trump had structured the White House in a way that seemed to undermine Mr Priebus's authority from day one.

There has been longstanding staff rivalry between veterans who signed up early for Trump's presidential campaign and Republican National Committee officials brought in for the fall race against Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton. Trump's chief of staff is known to have a fraught relationship with the new communications director and was reportedly among those West Wing staffers who opposed the hire.

In the same interview, he also defended the president on Russian Federation, particularly a report that indicated White House Senior Adviser Jared Kushner had proposed a secret communication channel with the Kremlin so that discussions before the inauguration could not be detected. Press secretary Sean Spicer was reportedly upset about Scaramucci's hiring - Spicer had handled many directoral responsibilities himself - and resigned as a result.

Priebus and other officials thought Scaramucci was unqualified for the job, and had blocked him from previous efforts to join the White House. I want to thank the President for giving me this very special opportunity.

Scaramucci has openly accused Priebus of leaking inside information to the press and threatened to contact the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Department of Justice to shore up the leaks.
