Qualcomm & HTC Announce VIVE Standalone VR Headset For China

HTC is continuing in its quest to make virtual reality more accessible with the announcement of a second standalone VR headset. HTC has now launched a new standalone Vive VR headset, but there's a catch. The Chinese variant of the standalone headset is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 processor which is more than capable enough of powering decent VR experiences as we found out when we went hands-on with Qualcomm's standalone VR headset in 2016.

When will this standalone VR Vive headset be released?

Qualcomm is the new partner coming on board to the HTC-Valve team, providing its powerful chip Snapdragon 835. But we also know that HTC is a smartphone company with expertise in mobility and design.

Will a United Kingdom version of the HTC Vive standalone VR headset be released? This marks the first major player in the virtual reality space to officially reveal a standalone product intended for the broad consumer market that requires a more affordable, portable VR solution. At present, the HTC Vive is by far the best headset, but it requires a complex PC set-up and wires to work. While they have yet to materialize, HTC has just announced that it's releasing the VIVE Standalone headset, and it will be exclusive to China.

While it's clear that it's marketed only at the Chinese market and won't be coming to the United Kingdom anytime soon, it signals that progress is being made in that department. Crisis Action VR offers compatibility with HTC Vive, Oculus Rift, and keyboard-and-mouse control options, so players are able to kill zombies or fight against real people using whatever tools they prefer.

MS faces turbulent period with interim coach
Wayne County High School head coach Todd Mangum has another 2018 Ole Miss commit: defensive tackle Quentin Bivens. Ole Miss is facing 21 accusations from the NCAA about improper recruiting.

Facebook-owned Oculus has not officially announced its intent but rumors in July point us to another Qualcomm-powered headset that will sell for around $200.

There's also no word on how much the headset will cost or what it'll look like, although HTC has released a "concept silhouette" that you can see below.

China regional president of Vive, HTC, Mr. Alvin W. Graylin reportedly confirmed the aforementioned news.
