Nobel Peace Laureate Liu Xiaobo Has Died

A furious China responded on Friday to worldwide censure over the death of Nobel laureate Liu Xiaobo by describing the decision to award him the peace prize in 2010 as "blasphemy", and said it had lodged protests with several countries for meddling in its "domestic affairs" by speaking up for the pro-democracy activist.

Oslo, Jul 14 The former chairman of the Norwegian Nobel Committee today justified awarding Chinese dissident Liu Xiaobo with the 2010 peace prize which beijing slammed as "blasphemy".

Press Secretary Sean Spicer says in a brief statement, "The President's heartfelt condolences go out to Liu Xiaobo's wife, Liu Xia, and his family and friends".

His death, at a hospital in the northeastern city of Shenyang, was confirmed by a statement from the Chinese government, and it made Liu the latest in a string of Chinese dissidents whose incarceration ended in serious illness or fatality.

Liu was granted medical parole in late June as the Chinese government revealed that he had late-stage liver cancer, but he died under the close guard of authorities.

In a statement, UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Zeid Ra'ad Al Hussein said the human rights movement "in China and across the world has lost a principled champion who devoted his life to defending and promoting human rights, peacefully and consistently, and who was jailed for standing up for his beliefs".

Former Amnesty International Norway leader Petter Eide claimed that Prime Minister Erna Solberg reacted with relief when informed of the death of Nobel Peace Prize victor Liu Xiaobo in China.

"CHRD urges the global community to do everything possible to free Liu Xia, Liu Xiaobo's wife and the love of his life", the group said in a statement on its website.

"Now, we are most concerned about Liu Xia, but there has been no information about her".

Chancellor Angela Merkel's spokesman, Steffen Seibert, told reporters Wednesday that Liu, who is suffering from advanced liver cancer, has asked to leave with his wife for treatment overseas.

"We will also use public opinion and public opinion pressure to urge the Chinese Communist Party to open the cage door, so Liu Xia can get free" along with her brother, Hu said.

"If Xi does the right thing, we can all commend that action", Cruz said.

Liu's absence from the 2010 Nobel ceremony was marked by an empty chair.

The Chinese foreign ministry said Liu Xia would be treated in accordance with the law.

Liu Xia told Reuters that he wanted to dedicate his prize to all those who died in the Tiananmen crackdown.

Nobel Peace Prize Laureate, Liu Xiaobo has died in Chinese custody at the age of 61.

"Ever since leaving the safety and comfort of America to lead the protests at Tiananmen Square in 1989, Dr. Liu sealed his fate as a persistent focus of persecution from the authoritarian [China]".

Liu died Thursday of liver cancer while serving an 11-year sentence for incitement to subvert state power.

In May 2017, Liu was diagnosed with liver cancer.

Yang denounced the way Liu was "slowly murdered by the regime in front of the world", and said the worldwide community must hold Beijing accountable. He was jailed in 2009 for drafting a petition calling for democracy in China.

Carl von Ossietzky, a pacifist who died in 1938 in Nazi Germany's Berlin, was the last Nobel Peace Prize victor to live out his dying days under state surveillance.

Protesters there called for Liu to be released during a recent visit by Chinese President Xi Jinping to celebrate the 20th anniversary of Hong Kong's return to Chinese rule. We must not forget the "foot soldiers" in the Chinese repressive apparatus who were accomplices: Jia Lianchun, the president of Beijing No. 1 Intermediate People's Court, his assessors Zheng Wenwei and Zhai Changxi, and the prosecutors Zhang Rongge and Pan Xueqing, who were all happy to convict Liu Xiaobo in a trial lasting just two hours.

While Beijing may have shrugged off foreign censure, authorities feared Liu's appeal at home, his supporters said.
