Kuwait shuts Iran cultural mission, expels diplomats

In reaction, Kuwait charge d'affaires was summoned to the Foreign Ministry on Thursday after release of reports on the Kuwaiti government's decision.

Kuwait also ordered the closure of the Iranian "military, cultural and trade" missions, the official said.

These measures were taken after the issuance of a court verdict on what is known as the "Al-Abdali cell" and the involvement of some Iranian bodies in assisting and supporting the cell members, Saudi Press Agency (SPA) quoted an official source in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs as saying Thursday.

Kuwait has ordered the Iranian envoy and 14 other diplomats to leave the country for their alleged links to a "spy and terror cell".

"The government of the state of Kuwait made a decision to take actions in accordance with diplomatic norms and in abidance with the Vienna conventions with regards to its relationship with the Islamic Republic of Iran", acting Information Minister Sheikh Mohammad al-Mubarak al-Sabah said in a separate statement.

Second round of Brexit talks begins as discrepancy and uncertainty clouding negotiations
Matters regarding Britain's departure from the economic bloc will be handled by subordinates until Davis returns on Thursday. Monday's discussions will focus on citizen's rights and the bill the United Kingdom will pay to exit.

The row comes at a time when Kuwait is trying to mediate an end to the Gulf's worst diplomatic crisis in years. "Alireza Enayati, the Iranian ambassador to Kuwait, must leave within 48 days", the Iranian Students News Agency (ISNA) said.

He urged the regional states to maintain friendly relations with Iran because they "need it". They were tried and convicted after guns and explosives were discovered in a raid.

In a separate statement, acting Information Minister for Kuwait, Sheikh Mohammad al-Mubarak al-Sabah, stated that: "The government of the state of Kuwait chose to take actions in accordance with diplomatic norms and in abidance with the Vienna conventions with regards to its relationship with the Islamic Republic of Iran".

Cell members were convicted of working for Iran's Revolutionary Guards and Lebanon's Hezbollah.

They received sentences ranging from a few years in prison to, in one case, the death penalty, though the latter sentence was later reduced to life imprisonment.
