British Columbia declares state of emergency as wildfires rage

The lack of air combined with record-high temperatures, humidity levels comparable to those you see in a desert, and wind gusts mean ideal conditions for wildfires, says Phillips.

British Columbia has donated 100 million dollars in aid to the victims of forest fires on Sunday, while the fires are increasing in the center of this canadian province.

Over 10,000 people were forced from their homes in B.C., as of Monday morning, with firefighters in the province using all resources to contain over 130 wildfires that are burning.

"The fire wardens are talking to people about the ban and distributing information about it in the region's camping areas and recreation sites".

"We're focusing now on public safety, keeping these fires away from communities, protecting transportation routes, things like that", the official added.

Yesterday, Canada's federal government offered to help British Columbia respond to the fast-spreading wildfires, though provincial authorities said they may have enough resources already. Winds have been variable at 5 to 10 miles per hour.

According to reports, Justine Hunse of the B.C. Wildfire Service said the fire threatening Cache Creek had burned an estimated 2 miles between Cache Creek and Ashcroft after exploding through Friday from a small fire just north of Ashcroft. "If it settles in and around the fires, it traps moisture closer to the ground... which tends to minimize fire behaviour".

"Given the current wildfire situation and the expected increase in wildfire activity, the Province is taking this extraordinary measure of declaring a provincial state of emergency", the statement reads. A hospital was closed as a precaution.

As fires surrounded three sides of Cache Creek, most of the town's 1,000 or so residents heeded the evacuation order signed Friday afternoon by Mayor John Ranta.
