28 inmates killed in Mexico prison riot

Officials initially put the death toll at five, but later said mutilated bodies were found strewn throughout the wing where shots were heard early Thursday.

An internal report from state police stated that guards said some of the victim-inmates' throats were slashed.

This prison is the most crowded in Guerrero, with 2,100 prisoners, according to Mexican government statistics. Three more inmates were wounded in the violence, Mr Alvarez said. Heredia also said that the governor has ordered an investigation which will include focusing on prison staff.

In June, seven people were killed, including three police, when officers stormed the Ciudad Victoria prison in the northern state of Tamaulipas to regain control.

The killings at the prison exemplify the most recent increase in violent crimes.

A report issued last month by Mexico's governmental rights agency said numerous country's prisons are unsafe, overcrowded and understaffed.

Acapulco, one of Mexico's most famous beach resorts, was once a playground for Hollywood stars but in recent years has been roiled by vicious gang warfare.

Despite reports of gunfire in the prison, all the casualties were due to wounds from sharp instruments, such as the improvised weapons that are fashioned by inmates, Mr Alvarez said.

Mexico has suffered a wave of bloodshed in the past decade that has left more than 200,000 people dead or missing as drug cartels wage war on each other and Mexican security forces.

The riot is said to be the deadliest seen in the country since 49 inmates were killed during violence at Topo Chico prison in Monterrey past year.

Acapulco is the biggest city of Guerrero and the incident took place on the same day when the Homeland Security (DHS) secretary John Kelly was visiting Guerrero, which lies in the southwest of the country, reported the Guardians.
