Woman who raped and murdered three girls is volunteering at school

There is more reaction to the news that convicted killer Karla Homolka has been volunteering at her children's school in Montreal.

Her ex-husband Bernardo remains in prison, although he has a parole hearing scheduled for later this year. She was released in 2005 and married the brother of her attorney, with whom she has multiple kids, according to reports.

CTV reported that Greaves Adventist Academy school officials confirmed that Homolka was not a regular volunteer, but that she was asked to come into the classroom on one occasion and also attended a school field trip and brought a dog in for show and tell. "My daughter was playing with the dog of Karla Homolka, and I was right next to her, but I didn't know who she was".

A spokesman for the Seventh-day Adventist Church, which runs the school, told the station that Homolka was not a regular volunteer and was not allowed to be alone with the children, which would have required a criminal background check.

"How would you feel about your child interacting with a serial killer?".

French, who was 15 at the time, was abducted by the couple while walking home from school in 1992 and held captive for three days before she was murdered.

Homolka and Bernardo pretended to ask her for directions before Bernardo attacked her from behind and forced her into the vehicle at knifepoint.

French President Emmanuel Macron had a somewhat awkward first meeting with his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin on Monday. On his part, Putin warned that sanctions against Russian Federation over Ukraine would "in no way" resolve the crisis.

Homolka and Bernardo's murder trials were high-profile cases in the early 1990s. Rodney Stafford tells CHCH that the fact that Homolka is allowed to volunteer at a school is unacceptable.

The school did not immediately respond to a request for comment from The Canadian Press.

Holmolka pleaded guilty to manslaughter charges to have her sentence reduced by 12 years.

Stephanie Deligne, whose daughter attends Grade 4 and is in a class with one of Homolka's children, said she would have liked to have been informed about the situation. They have three children.

Tim Danson, a lawyer who represents the French and Mahaffy families, said Wednesday it was a "kick in the gut" for the families to hear reports of Homolka seemingly living a normal life with her husband and children. Homolka can also never be alone with the children.

"The school has been here for a long time and we have never been involved in anything contrary to the proper norms of the students", school superintendent Marc Bouzy said in a May 17 statement.

"The administration told me I am being too critical", she said. "While we work through the concerns stated by parents and other stakeholders, we welcome those associated with the school to contact the Quebec Conference office of Education".
