Third London Bridge Terror Attacker Named As Moroccan-Italian Youssef Zaghba

Saturday's rampage followed a suicide bombing that killed 22 adults and children at a pop concert in Manchester two weeks ago, and an attack in March when five people died after a auto was driven into pedestrians on London's Westminster Bridge.

The Home Office has not commented as there is an ongoing police investigation, while Scotland Yard has said Zaghba, who lived in east London, was not a police or MI5 subject of interest.

The Italian daily Corriere della Sera reported Tuesday that Youssef Zaghba had been stopped in Italy while trying to go to Syria in 2016.

It was the third terrorist attack in the U.K.in three months, leading to serious questions for the government and the security services.

Several people had alerted police to Butt's extremist views and he also appeared past year in a documentary, "The Jihadis Next Door", in which he is shown unfurling a black-and-white flag associated with the Islamic State group. A string of opinion polls over the past couple of weeks have pointed to a narrowing in the gap between her Conservative Party and the main opposition Labour Party.

As a holder of an Italian passport Zaghba was not liable for expulsion under the kind of administrative order Italy routinely uses against suspected Islamist militants from Morocco and Tunisia.

All three were shot dead by police after they drove a hired van into pedestrians on London Bridge at around 10 p.m. before stabbing people in the area around the nearby Borough Market, killing seven people and injuring almost 50.

Prince Harry has spoken in praise of Australians living in London after two of them were confirmed to have been killed in the van and knife attacks there over the weekend.

It had been set at "critical" in the days after the Manchester concert bombing on May 22 that killed 22 people - reflecting a judgment that an attack might be imminent because accomplices with similar bombs might be on the loose.

"Our intelligence has notified to British intelligence the circumstances of this Italian-Moroccan who has been suspected of terrorist activities in Italy", Roberti was quoted as saying during a conference at the interior ministry by Italian wire service La Presse.

Butt was known to police and MI5 and Assistant Commissioner Mark Rowley said an investigation into him started in 2015.

Butt was one of three men who rammed a van into pedestrians on London Bridge in the city's center before launching a stabbing spree in bars and restaurants at the nearby Borough Market.

Londoner James McMullan, 32, and 30-year-old Canadian Christine Archibald were the first victims killed in the attack to be named.

"As she ran towards danger, in an effort to help people on the bridge, Kirsty sadly lost her life".

Thousands of people across the British capital paid their respects to the victims, when a minutes silence was held across London at 11am.

The Islamic State jihadist group claimed Saturday's attack.

The security agencies are already facing criticism for supposed failures over the attacks in Manchester, Westminster and London Bridge. "He was not a police or MI5 subject of interest", the police said in a statement.

Corbyn himself has faced repeated questioning over his own past views and actions on security matters.

Police union official Cedric Michel said the attacker was armed with a hammer and targeted a police officer on patrol on the esplanade in front of the cathedral.

While the political debate raged, the investigation into Saturday's attack continued, with police searching an address in Ilford, east London, in the early hours of Tuesday. Twelve other people who were detained in connection to the attack have been released without charge, police say.

They also published images of a white vehicle which investigators believe Abedi took items from to build the bomb.

"He was very sociable, seemed like an ordinary family man".

Former Justice Minister Dermot Ahern says they always feared Ireland would be used as a stepping stone for terrorists targetting the UK.
