Thad Matta is out as Ohio State basketball coach

Although the timing of this move is freakish, Ohio State is coming off a disappointing season where the squad failed to qualify for the NCAA tournament or the NIT.

Ohio State has called a 2 p.m. ET press conference with athletic director Gene Smith and men's basketball coach Thad Matta.

Matta led Ohio State to nine NCAA tourney appearances during his tenure, including a stretch of seven-straight trips to the Big Dance from 2009-15. According to Bucknuts.com (247 Sports), Matta will announce that 2017-18 will be his final season as Buckeyes' coach.

COLUMBUS, Ohio - Thad Matta is out as Ohio State's basketball coach, with the Buckeyes having missed the last two NCAA Tournaments amid an exodus of players. Last year's tie for 10th in the conference was the low point, but Ohio State finished fifth, sixth and seventh in the three previous seasons.

With a national search now underway, here are three names that could be of interest to the Buckeyes.

She continued: "I've always loved Manchester and not just tonight, it's always felt like a home away from home to me". He said: "Today's One Love Manchester benefit concert will not only continue, but will do so with greater goal ".

Who should Ohio State consider? "Recruiting is a major part of it, and we weren't winning the recruiting battles", Smith said.

Those plans changed Friday during a follow-up meeting. And I think the last thing that I hope I'm always remembered for is that we always did it the right way. Matta got his first head coaching job was at Butler in 2000 where he stayed one year before going to Xavier from 2001-2004. Matta even said, "Yeah, probably" when asked if he would still be the coach if he were healthy. He has undergone four back surgeries.

He had two stints as an assistant coach at Miami University before returning to Butler as an assistant in 1997 and becoming head coach of the Bulldogs in 2000.

"It used to be health", Matta said. "That this program was run the right way".
