Study suggests hung United Kingdom parliament

British Prime Minister Theresa May was fighting to shore up her general election campaign on Wednesday after a shock projection suggested she could lose her parliamentary majority, leaving the pound wobbling.

In a hectic campaign which was suspended after the Manchester bombing last week, pollsters, who universally got it wrong before the last vote in 2015, have offered a vast range for the result of the election: From May losing her majority to a landslide victory for her Conservatives of more than 100 seats.

The seat-by-seat prediction by YouGov for The Times suggests that the Conservatives are on course to win 310 seats at the election - short of an absolute majority of 326 seats needed to form a Government.

British Prime Minister Theresa May's lead over the opposition Labour party has nearly halved to eight points in the space of a week, an opinion poll from Panelbase showed today.

"People are saying Jeremy is a strong leader, and he is - he's got integrity and he's got principles and that is certainly coming across", she said.

Sterling showed little reaction to the poll, steadying against the dollar after plunging around 2 cents last week.

A hung parliament occurs when no party has won enough seats in a general election to have a majority in the House of Commons.

With just a week to go before Brits go to the polls, the latest survey puts the Conservatives just three percentage points above Jeremy Corbyn's Labour.

But with the labour market expected to hit full employment this year, there is optimism that wage growth will accelerate. Yet the decline stemmed more from people leaving the labor force than an increase in the number of people finding work.

YouGov said May was still the most favoured choice for prime minister, though her 43 per cent rating is the lowest it has ever been.

This is because while younger voters may tell pollsters in large numbers they intend to vote Labour, they are far less likely to actually make it to the polling station.

The prime minister would undoubtedly face questions over her leadership if the modelling by YouGov is proved to be accurate in just over a week, especially after she was forced into a humiliating U-turn over a proposed social care reformed dubbed the "dementia tax" by critics.

In contrast to YouGov's model, other projections suggested May would win soundly. The Labour Party would gain 28 seats to reach 257.

The YouGov/NUT poll reflects recent findings from polling company, Ipsos Mori, which reported on Wednesday that education was the third most important issue for all voters after the NHS and Brexit.

YouGov's chief executive, Stephan Shakespeare, said the model had been tested during the European Union referendum campaign, when it consistently put the winning Leave side ahead.

The YouGov research allowed for big variations in the outcome of the election, ranging from as high as 345 seats for the Conservatives, 15 more than their current number, to as low as 274, The Times said.

"The alternative is that all those young Corbynistas will prove a mirage and that some polls still contain too numerous sort of young people who vote, with the end result being that the Conservatives win a large or landslide majority", he said.
