Shots fired in London 'terrorist' attack

Earlier on Saturday, local media reported that a van had hit several pedestrians on London Bridge while a stabbing attack took place at the Borough Market.

Witnesses told the BBC that a white van veered off the road on London Bridge and hit five or six people. There was a BBC reporter who just happened to be on the bridge this evening, and what she said - her name is Holly Jones.

The bridge incident also comes more than two months after a man drove an SUV into a crowd on the sidewalk along Westminster Bridge in London, killing at least four people.

She added that she saw a man, who had his shirt off and was in handcuffs, being arrested by police. Police also say they are responding to incidents at two other locations nearby. "So the police checking the Thames", Ms Jones said.

One witness told Reuters that she saw what appeared to be three people with knife wounds and possibly their throats cut at London Bridge. Police tweeted that Londoners should "remain calm but be alert and vigilant".

A witness has told Sky News they heard gunfire near the iconic bridge after the van hit pedestrians.

The attack came more than a week after a suicide bomber killed 22 people at a concert in the northern city of Manchester and days ahead of the June 8 election, where security is a major theme.

The possible attacker was shown on the ground outside the Wheatsheaf pub in Borough Market near London Bridge. And that's what we have at Borough Market.

Russia , a staunch Damascus ally, has been providing air cover to Syrian President Bashar Assad's offensive on the IS since 2015. The statement also said Russian Federation had informed the U.S., Turkish and Israeli military forces of the strike in advance.

London Bridge station is also closed.

"Horrific scene at London Bridge. The Uber stopped, we asked people what was going on - people said there was shooting", said Yoann Belmere, 40, a French banker living in London.

I've certainly never seen anything like it in my time here so far.

Canadian diplomats in England are advising Canadians to avoid the area around London Bridge which was the scene of an incident late Saturday.

Armed officers flooded the busy area of the city after a van struck multiple people on the bridge.

Soon after, reports started coming in of stabbings at Borough Market, a nearby area full of bars and restaurants surrounding a popular food market. But they said later that turned out to be an unrelated stabbing.

And then a couple of seconds later, about three police vans flew past.

It also recalled an attack on Westminster Bridge when 52-year-old British Muslim convert Khalid Mahmood rammed his vehicle into pedestrians before crashing into the barriers surrounding parliament and then stabbing a police officer to death.
