Raikkonen now Ferrari number 2 says Hamilton

It seemed to be a case of the Ferrari team giving preferential treatment to Vettel with Raikkonen's stop looking like it came far too early.

After Vettel handed Ferrari their first Monaco Grand Prix win in 16 years on Sunday, the Briton said that the Italian team were clearly favouring the championship leader over team-mate Kimi Raikkonen.

Vettel, himself, said he was shocked to have got ahead of his teammate.

Raikkonen lost crucial time to Vettel, who was able to continue to lap at a faster speed than his teammate before pitting five laps later and resuming the race in the lead.

His 45th career win was the German's third in six races but there was plenty of sympathy for Raikkonen, who last won with Lotus in 2013.

With Raikkonen taking pole ahead of Vettel, Ferrari's prospects of ending their wait for a first Monaco triumph since Michael Schumacher's success in 2001 always looked extremely good. "We spoke about the race before".

Australian Daniel Ricciardo, who was unlucky not to win past year, finished third for Red Bull, despite hitting the barrier at Ste Devote, ahead of Valtteri Bottas of Mercedes and Dutch teenager Max Verstappen in the second Red Bull.

Daniel Ricciardo, Vettel's teammate during a dismal season at Red Bull in 2014, finished third to make it an even worse day for Mercedes.

McLaren's Jenson Button collided with a safety vehicle collision. This was such an intense race.

"I was devastated after qualifying but to come away with some points is better than nothing".

"Of course I can't afford another weekend like this", said Hamilton.

Jenson Button's one-off return to replace Fernando Alonso - racing in the Indy 500 - proved a disappointing one as he had to start from the pit lane because of a 15-place grid penalty for changes to his power unit.

Button received a 15-place grid penalty after McLaren were forced to make unscheduled power unit changes to the British driver's vehicle. "Those points might be valuable at the end - it was damage limitation".

Wehrlein's team mate Marcus Ericsson then plowed straight on into the barriers at the first corner with 13 laps remaining.

"These tyres are like driving on ice when you get a Safety Car" Carlos Sainz was a well-judged sixth for Toro Rosso ahead of Hamilton, who had started 13th, and Frenchman Romain Grosjean of Haas. Frenchman Romain Grosjean was eighth.

Verstappen took advantage of the pause to pit for fresh ultra-soft tyres before, when the action resumed after 66 laps, the final chase, and battle of attrition, began.
