NYC subway riders evacuated from four trains after emergency brake incident

One vehicle of a subway train derailed in Upper Manhattan, triggering a power outage that halted service on four lines and stranded some straphangers Tuesday morning.

A subway derailed at 125th Street in Manhattan Tuesday, sending panicked riders fleeing the train and walking the tracks to safety.

A passenger posted this picture on Twitter showing damage to the train floor, writing: "Just got off the derailed A train that crashed into the subway wall".

The southbound A train was pulling into the 125th Street stop when the brake suddenly snapped on and sent two of its eight cars off the rails and into the subway tunnel wall about 9:48 a.m., officials said.

The Fire Department of NY said three patients were being treated for minor injuries.

The New York City subway system has been hampered by aging infrastructure (leading to signal failures and power outages) and equipment, as well as surging numbers of riders for years, but the rush-hour delays have been especially ludicrous this summer.

The fire and police departments conducted a joint operation - involving 300 responders - in order to round up the passengers and bring them above ground, Nigro said.

New York City's B and C trains and portions of the A and D trains have been suspended after a train incident on the A line in Upper Manhattan.

South Koreans Hold Mass March to Denounce THAAD Weapons System
Korea temporarily suspended the Thaad deployment, citing a need for an environmental impact assessment of the US missile shield. Seoul and Washington agreed in July previous year to place one THAAD battery in Seongju county, North Gyeongsang province.

The footage shows firefighters helping people off the train and down the tracks.

Passengers were evacuated from the derailed train, as well as three other trains, including one C and one D, that were also in the tunnel at the time, the MTA said.

'The brakes went into emergency and we need to determine why'.

A total of 34 people were injured.

Jack Cox, a software developer, said he felt a "large thump" and heard and felt the train grinding for as long as 30 seconds. He said the station wasn't smoky, but there was a strong, acrid smell.

Governor Andrew Cuomo, who controls the MTA board, has not issued a statement on the accident.

Subway service was disrupted for hours and there were several minor injuries.
