Mothers! Why room-sharing after 4 months is bad for your baby

Babies who began sleeping in their own room somewhere in between 4 to 9 months old also slept longer, for a median of 10 hours.

But the differences in sleep among the room-sharers at 4 months were small, said Hauck, co-author of a commentary accompanying the study. Results were striking. It was seen that if a 9 month old baby slept on his/her own, they were more likely to get at least 40 minutes of sleep more than if they were sleeping in their parents' bedroom.

SIDS is the sudden unexplained death of a child less than one year of age.

"Our research suggests that parents respond to these brief awakenings, which interrupts both parent and child sleep when they are room-sharing, but not as much when the baby is sleeping in a separate room", Paul said by email.

Paul added,"Inadequate infant sleep can lead to obesity, poor sleep later in life and can negatively affect parents".

Researchers used data in the study from the INSIGHT which included 279 mothers along with their babies, who gave birth at Penn State Health Milton S. Hershey Medical Centre. Solo sleeping habits had lasting effects: At the 30-month mark, 4-month-olds who'd slept in their own rooms continued to clock more sleep than infants who'd shared a room for more than four months.

The findings differ from a 2016 statement from the American Academy of Pediatrics, which recommended that parents room-share with their infants until the they are 1-year-old. The remaining half received strong recommendations and advice for lowering the SIDS risks by sharing a room.

"People don't know quite why the risk is lowered", Dr. Ari Brown, an Austin, Texas-based pediatrician and author of the Baby411 book series, previously told CNN.

Hot water? It's just as good if you wash in cold
Antibacterial soaps were banned in the United States previous year after claims they do " more harm than good". They also said that using antibacterial soap instead of normal soap didn't make much difference either.

"One of the reasons we wanted to explore this is that the evidence is really weak for 6 to 12 months", states Paul.

Sharing a bedroom with a baby is a guarantee that the parents will lose sleep.

Researchers found that "early independent sleepers", babies who slept in their own room before 4 months, slept longer, and for longer stretches, than babies who slept in their parents' room. He also notes that keeping babies close to the parents will increase the likelihood that unsafe behaviors, such as bringing the baby into the parents' bed to soothe them, will occur.

Breastfeeding has also been linked to a lower risk of SIDS.

Risks for SIDS include sleeping in the same bed as parents, loose bedding, sleeping face-down and living at home with a smoker.

Dr. Moon warned in response to Paul's study that just because sleep is uninterrupted it does not mean it's better. This, she said, was adequate as seven hours is more or less the normal sleep time for these babies.

"We think that a lot of the problems with SIDS is that babies don't arouse", she said, adding that if babies sleep too deeply or for too long, some experts believe this could put them at risk. Moon noted that the Penn State study was also not terribly diverse regarding socioeconomic or racial diversity, which raised questions for her regarding the findings speaking for the general population.

At four months old, room-sharing infants had greater odds of having a potentially unsafe object in bed with them, such as blankets or pillows, which are linked to sudden infant death syndrome because they can obstruct a baby's airway and cause them to suffocate.
