Michigan officials charged in Flint Legionnaires' outbreak

Charges were announced for five state and city officials, including Nick Lyon, the current director of the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services.

In this June 5, 2017 photo, Nick Lyon, Michigan Health and Human Services Director, speaks in support of the state's Medicaid expansion program in Lansing, Mich. Lyon was charged Wednesday, June 14, 2017, with involuntary manslaughter in a criminal investigation of Flint's lead-contaminated water.

"This is huge", another Freep writer, Kathy Gray, tweets from Lansing.

Chief Medical Executive Dr. Eden Wells will be charged with obstruction of justice, NPR reported.

Lyon was aware of the Legionnaires' outbreak in Genesee County at least one year before he informed the public, according to court documents.

The involuntary manslaughter charge stems from an outbreak of Legionnaires' disease, a type of pneumonia, that spread in the city following its switch in water source.

Rick Snyder said he is standing behind two state officials who were charged for their alleged role in the Flint water crisis.

According to the charging documents, Lyon once justified his handling of the outbreak by saying he couldn't "save everyone" and that "everyone has to die of something".

But then the full effect of the pills struck the former college hoops star and she began to feel drowsy. "I'm not here for that". Cosby arrived in court Wednesday along with his longtime hair stylist John Achison and Achison's wife, actress Sheila Frazier.

This ruling makes Lyon the most senior member of the state administration to be charged in the Flint probe.

There were almost 100 cases in the Flint area, including 12 deaths, in 2014 and 2015.

An attorney for Lyon could not be reached for comment.

Mid-March. 2016: State officials testify before Congress, including Snyder and the state-appointed emergency manager who oversaw Flint when the water source was switched to the river.

A failure to treat the water properly also caused lead contamination in the water supply for the city of 100,000.

Remember, it has been over three years now since the people in the city of Flint had clean water in their taps.

"What we discovered was that when the Flint River water went into the system it released a lot of iron, and removed the disinfectant from the water", Edwards said.

December 2: Researchers report that water in Flint is improving after finding no detectable levels of lead in 57 percent of homes during another round of tests.
