Merkel: Hamburg G20 to focus on Paris climate deal

Beijing stepped up as an ally for Europe in the fight against climate change after U.S. President Donald Trump's decision to withdraw from the Paris Climate Agreement.

Trump claimed that the agreement was disadvantageous to the country when pulling out of the landmark agreement on 1 June, but Merkel told the German parliament she was adamant about maintaining the deal.

The summit was expected to be dominated by Mr Trump's first meeting with Vladimir Putin since his election as USA president.

"The disagreement is obvious, and it would be dishonest to gloss over it", she said.

Merkel also reiterated her view that climate change is "one of the greatest challenges facing humanity - an existential challenge".

"There is actually no disagreement between the European Union and China on climate change", Figueres said.

Trump's exit from the 2015 Paris pact had made Europe "more determined than ever" to make the accord a success, she stressed.

North Korea repatriated a sick USA citizen it had held captive for 17 months, and Dennis Rodman arrived with fanfare in Pyongyang. Richardson said his center in Sante Fe, N.M. received a call Tuesday from the Warmbiers with an update on their son's condition.

"Since the USA announced that it would exit the Paris agreement, we can not expect any easy talks in Hamburg", Merkel said, referring to the Group of 20 summit scheduled for July 7-8.

But Merkel's comments Thursday suggest there could be more frost than expected ahead of the G20 next week, when Xi joins the chancellor to unveil two pandas loaned by Beijing to Berlin zoo in a sign of friendly ties. Today, Angela Merkel meets with Berlin leaders of European countries participating in the G20 summit. "Obviously, we see things differently", she added.

French President Emmanuel Macron added that "it is no use isolating a state". She said that "the Paris agreement is irreversible and it is not negotiable".

German Chancellor Angela Merkel says she hopes for a "clear signal" from next week's Group of 20 summit in favor of free markets and against isolationism.

She added: "If there is no guarantee for the four freedoms then this exercise will have to lead to a situation where there are certain effects on the future relationship between the United Kingdom and the 27 member states".

Merkel recently urged the European Union to "take its fate into its own hands" as the us and the United Kingdom are looking after their own interests.

The meeting is expected to develop in a tense atmosphere, during the discussions planned due to the differences with the United States in issues of general interest, as climate change and worldwide trade.
