Health bill setback for McConnell sets stage for final push

Facing rebellion on the left and the right, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell on Tuesday delayed a vote on the Senate replacement for the Affordable Care Act.

Senator Lindsey Graham was asked this week about Trump embracing the House plan with a White House Rose Garden celebration, only to later call it "mean". The decision was described by a Republican aide and another informed person who spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak publicly about the closed-door decision.

Utah's senators, on opposite sides of the debate over the Senate's health care bill, joined their Republican colleagues at a meeting Tuesday with President Donald Trump after plans were scrapped for a vote this week.

McConnell had hoped to push the measure through his chamber before an Independence Day recess that party leaders fear will be used by foes of the legislation to tear away support. Eight Republican senators have said they will not vote for the bill and many of those opposing the current version were at the meeting.

McConnell has promised since 2010 that Republicans, who view Obamacare as a costly government intrusion, would destroy the law "root and branch" if they controlled Congress and the White House.

White House officials said if Republicans Sens. A separate poll by Morning Consult/Politico, also conducted last week before the CBO issued its analysis, found Republicans evenly split over the Senate proposal's cuts to Medicaid. It lets him say he did everything he could to pass the repeal his Republican base wants.

Fifty-five percent of the 1,205 people polled said they disapprove of the bill, and 25% said they hadn't heard enough about it to form an opinion. Dean Heller, who is vulnerable in next year's midterms, to denounce the legislation last Friday; Ohio's Republican Gov. John Kasich held an event at the National Press Club Tuesday to criticize it.

He says, "I think we are at least going to get very close or get it over the line".

The House went through its own struggles with its version of the bill, pulling it from the floor short of votes before reviving it and narrowly passing it in May.

The Obamacare law expanded health insurance coverage to some 20 million people, in large part through an expansion of Medicaid.

Several Republican senators, including Sen. And even if you buy the administration's argument that the Congressional Budget Office has a lousy track record, its report certainly made the Senate bill a tougher political sell.

We're not resting on any laurels, nor do we feel any sense yet of accomplishment other than we are making progress because the American people are listening to our arguments.
