Officials said a family of four, including four-year-old twins, died in the suburb of Kraaifontein after lightning set their house on fire. Thousands of people have been left homeless.

While one single storm will not end drought conditions, any rainfall is welcomed as two dams in the region had completely dried up in May, according to the BBC.

Radio station Magic reported on Twitter: "This storm has affected the link between our studio and transmitter so we are not on MW 828 but we are streaming via http://www.magic828.co.za".

The Earth website, which describes itself as a global map of wind, weather and ocean conditions, provided a great view on Wednesday morning of the gale force winds lashing the Western Cape, bringing torrential rain to the drought-stricken province (see image above, or click through to the live chart). The provincial government warned the public to stay away from the beaches, with sea swells of 12 meters (39 feet) expected.

As a result of the severe warning issued by the weather service, the Western Cape Education Department has taken the decision to close schools in the area on Wednesday "in the interest of learner and educator safety".
