Dufner, Lingmerth lead Memorial

Jason Dufner eagled the par-four 18th in firing another seven-under 65 at Muirfield Village on Friday to extend his lead early in the second round of the Memorial with a tournament record 36-hole total of 14-under-par 130.

Justin Thomas hits on the second hole during the third round of the Memorial golf tournament, Saturday, June 3, 2017, in Dublin, Ohio.

Jordan Spieth, one shot behind Dufner after the opening round, played in the afternoon.

"I told (caddie) Michael (Greller), I'm going to aim for the steepest slope, get it to about 15, 18 feet, and knock it in there it from there", Spieth said. Dufner leads Daniel Summerhays by five, Rickie Fowler by six and everybody else by at least eight strokes.

Dufner had hit all 17 greens in regulation before falling short at the home hole.

The 33-year-old from Utah, who finished third in last year's PGA Championship, trailed midway leader Jason Dufner by five shots overnight but five birdies - and a bogey on the 13th - saw him move into the outright lead on 13 under par ahead of 2013 victor Matt Kuchar.

He had five birdies in addition to the eagle to hold a six-shot lead at the end of Friday's morning wave.

He bounced back with a birdie on the 15th but then gave that shot straight back, before two pars saw him sign for a 68.

The ever-smiling Mr. Met mascot is back at Citi Field, a day after the person inside the big-headed costume was caught on video making an obscene gesture to a fan.

"Coming into the day I was one shot back and before I teed off I was eight back", he said.

Starting on the back nine holes at Muirfield Village, the Fairmont native birdied three of four holes, including back-to-back birdies on Nos. More than his solid round was Dufner's collapse. "My goal was to get in contention, be in this situation, and I'm here so I'm really excited for tomorrow to see how I perform".

"The last thing I said before I hit it was, the idea is to have the pin stop it".

"I definitely didn't think I would be three shots ahead with a 68. Today, I was really focused on it".

He said he'll call on memories of two major championship performances previous year - his tie for eighth at the US Open and his solo third place finish at the PGA Championship.

Fowler started the tournament with a triple bogey on his second hole and he was 3 over through four holes when he turned it around Thursday for a 70. "And that's why it's such a great golf course because it does test everything".
