Cars 3 speeds past Wonder Woman at North American box office

"Wonder Woman" fell to second place in its third weekend in theaters, but it's still doing the heavy lifting for the otherwise lackluster summer box office.

Although "Cars 3" came in first this weekend it wasn't the best received of the films in the series. Compared to Cars 2, which opened to $66 million, and Cars, which saw $60 million, it's the lowest in the franchise.

At the same time, "Cars 3" came in 19 percent behind the 66.1 million Dollars domestic debut of "Cars 2" in 2011, which went on to earn 562.1 million USD worldwide.

In third place, the Tupac biopic "All Eyez on Me" debuted with a notable $27.1 million, while the Mandy Moore shark thriller "47 Meters Down" netted $11.5 million.

The report also states that the film is spearheading to $53.5 million from 4,256 locations, thus winning the numero uno spot.

Wonder Woman's worldwide rollout continues with Belgium on June 21, Egypt and Spain on June 23, and Japan on August 25. Only one in four critics had praise for the movie, in which Demetrius Shipp Jr. plays rapper Shakur.

Meanwhile, Rough Night - starring Scarlett Johansson, Ilana Glazer, Kate McKinnon, and Zoe Kravitz - brought in $8.1 million in its first weekend.

"It is genuinely a amusing movie that was made at the right price, and there is a place for Rough Night as summer counter-programming in the coming weeks", said Sony's distribution chief Adrian Smith. Lucia Aniello directed the film.

6 million, while holdover "The Mummy" slid to fourth place in weekend two with $13.9 million.
