Trump's Air Force Secretary Pick Confirmed

The U.S. Senate easily confirmed Heather Wilson, a former Republican member of the House of Representatives, on Monday to be President Donald Trump's secretary of the Air Force.

Wilson was approved by the Senate Armed Services Committee (SASC) last month, but an unnamed Senator reportedly put a hold on her confirmation vote pending answers about a military installation in his or her state.

She replaces Lisa Disbrow, who has been acting secretary of the Air Force since January 20, 2017. She added that she was a member of the House Intelligence Committee when China launched its anti-satellite (ASAT) test in 2007 "and I don't expect that things have slowed down since then".

Following disposition of the Wilson nomination, the Senate will immediately vote on the motion to invoke cloture on Executive Calendar #53, the nomination of Scott Gottlieb, of CT, to be Commissioner of Food and Drugs, Department of Health and Human Services.

The Trump administration has been slow to fill many other senior civilian posts at the Pentagon, leaving Defense Secretary Jim Mattis short of the support he needs to manage the nation's vast military enterprise. Wilson said she did nothing improper. "I look forward to getting to work, focusing on readiness, modernization, development of leaders and research for the future".

Trump's second pick for U.S. Army secretary, Mark Green, recently withdrew his name from consideration after controversial statements he made on transgender issues, Islam and evolution came to light.

Tigers: Cabrera, who came off the DL before Tuesday's game, was in the starting lineup and played the entire game Wednesday. Michael Fulmer and Danny Salazar were scheduled to take the mound for their respective clubs at Detroit's Comerica Park.

Wilson graduated from the Air Force Academy in 1982 and was in its third class to include women.

She collected almost half a million dollars in questionable payments from federally funded nuclear labs, the Energy Department's inspector general said in a 2013 report.

However, Wilson dismissed questions about these payments during her senate confirmation hearing and said she had completed the work and the inspector general had found no questionable dealings with her work.

Most recently, Wilson was the president of the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology.

However, Sandia reimbursed the government for fees paid to the consulting company run by Wilson. Wilson denied any impropriety. She served as a Captain in Europe and then joined the White House National Security Council staff under President George H.W. Bush. Trump has not nominated another individual to be Navy Secretary.
