Trump to speak at Arlington cemetery on Memorial Day

Before the president's speech, Dunford also addressed the crowd at Arlington Cemetery, thanking the men and women who have died in defense of our nation for their sacrifice.

"We only hope that every day we can prove worthy, not only of their sacrifice and service, but of the sacrifice made by the families and loved ones they left behind", Trump said.

A wreath is placed at the grave of former President John F. Kennedy, to mark the 100th anniversary of his birth, at Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, Va., Monday, May 29, 2017.

Robert Kelly, 29, was killed in a roadside bomb blast in 2010 during a foot patrol in Afghanistan's Helmand Province.

After the address, Trump visited a section of the cemetery for US service members killed in the Iraq and Afghanistan wars. Byers was on his third combat tour and, Trump said, ran through smoke and a hail of bullets to rescue an Afghan soldier when he was killed.

But Monday's speech was a far different tone for Trump, who urged Gold Star families to take comfort in the acknowledgment and support from a grateful nation. "We stand in awe of your son and his courageous sacrifice", Trump told David and Rose Byers, the parents. "Their story is one of selflessness, it is one of courage, and it is one of sheer commitment", he said. At the time, he did so alongside Vice President Mike Pence, who joined Trump at the ceremonies Monday morning. Bob Dole, who suffered permanently crippling injuries as a member of the 10th Mountain Division in a battle with the German army in Italy in World War II.

"I don't see any big issue here", said Homeland Security Secretary John Kelly.

Stokes fit for second ODI against South Africa
Stokes underwent a fitness test on Friday and passed, meaning that not only can he play the second ODI, but he can bowl as well. That became 10 off 10 balls when David Miller (71 not out) struck Jake Ball for a six and a four off successive deliveries.

Secretary Kelly's other son, Johnny, is getting ready for his fifth military deployment. And Kelly's son-in-law Jake is a wounded warrior. Later, during his remarks, Trump called on all Americans to continue to honor the sacrifice of fallen soldiers, "for the next 1,000 years".

Without a word, he slowly laid the wreath at the Tomb of the Unknowns. "Thank you, God bless your families & God bless the US!"

In the second, Trump says: "I look forward to paying my respects to our fearless men and women on this Memorial Day at Arlington National Cemetery later this morning".

Trump concluded the events of the day by honoring the "unknown soldiers" represented by the prestigious tomb on the grounds of the national cemetery.

Trump's recognition of Gold Star families came nearly a year after he became embroiled in a running argument with the family of Capt. Humayun Khan, who died in Iraq.

Trump honored Gold Star families calling their fallen loved ones "angels sent to us by God", in his first public address since returning from his first trip overseas as commander-in-chief.
