Syria Conflict: 'Huge Explosion' Rocks Damascus Airport

Syrian state media has attributed the missile strikes to Israel, the BBC reported.

The source said numerous arms are destined for an array of Iran-backed militias, led by Hezbollah, which have thousands of fighters engaged in some of the toughest fronts against Syrian rebels.

Syrian and rebel officials blamed Israel for the explosions on Thursday morning at warehouses near the Damascus airport that the Israeli news media said were housing weapons bound for the Lebanese militant group Hezbollah.

The same opposition sources are saying the target of the overnight attack was a Syrian Army airport near Damascus International, which is being used by Iran-backed forces.

The Syrian aircraft's penetration of Israeli airspace could trigger another military strike from Israel.

But Intelligence Minister Israel Katz, speaking to Army Radio from the United States, appeared to confirm involvement.

"Every time we receive intelligence information on plans to transfer advanced weaponry to Hezbollah, we will act", the minister added.

Israel seized 1,200 square kilometres (460 square miles) of the Golan from Syria in the Six-Day War of 1967 and later annexed it in a move never recognised by the global community.

The video was aired on Lebanese television, Reuters reported.

The Washington-based Foundation for Defense of Democracies, a right-leaning think tank that has criticized the nuclear deal Iran struck with world powers, has said Pouya Air is the latest name for a long-sanctioned airline.

Foreign Minister Jean-Marc Ayrault said France came to this conclusion after comparing samples from a 2013 sarin attack in Syria that matched the new ones.

A senior regional intelligence source who requested anonymity said the targeted depot handles a significant volume of weapons sent by air Iran, a leading ally of Assad in the region.

Syria's regime is allies with both Hezbollah and Iran, and Israel says Iran is using that connection to funnel weapons and resources to Hezbollah.

Hezbollah fought a monthlong war with Israel in 2006.

"We heard the explosion and buildings in the area shook".

Israel has carried out similar attacks in the past.

Syria has been embroiled in a civil war since 2011.
