Stokes fit for second ODI against South Africa

But ahead of next week's Champions Trophy tournament in England, the all-rounder showed no discomfort with the bat.

Stokes underwent a fitness test on Friday and passed, meaning that not only can he play the second ODI, but he can bowl as well.

England have begun this series with increased security measures promised around the match venues after Monday's terror attack in Manchester. That became 10 off 10 balls when David Miller (71 not out) struck Jake Ball for a six and a four off successive deliveries. It was all down to a heroic last over from Mark Wood. Another two edges followed in the over, but from there on Stokes dictated play.

Victory over South Africa, the world's No. 1 ODI side, gave England a morale boost just a week before it hosts the Champions Trophy and puts it 1-0 up in the three-match series.

The 25-year-old, who hit 11 fours and three sixes from 79 balls, told Sky Sports: "I t's always nice hitting the ball well and knowing you've got a bit of form behind you".

Stokes, the Indian Premier League's record two-million- dollar-man, shared stands of 95 with skipper Eoin Morgan and 77 with Jos Buttler.

South Africa's sloppy fielding saw ODI debutant left-arm spinner Keshav Mahraj, who bowled much better than figures of one for 72 in 10 overs suggested, have three catches dropped off his bowling alone.

England's victory was set up by Ben Stokes who scored his second career worldwide century in this format (101 off 79 balls, 11 fours and 3 sixes) and the renowned finishing power of Jos Buttler (65 not out off 53 balls, 7 fours). Stokes received reprieves off his first two deliveries.

Next ball produced another edge, with wicket-keeper Quinton de Kock failing to hold a more hard chance.

But as Wednesday s match demonstrated, England can win well without a major contribution from Stokes, a point emphasised by fast bowler Liam Plunkett. But they both fell in quick succession and a promising position of 145 for one became a score of 267 all out in 45 overs for AB de Villiers's side. Amla eventually went leaning back on a thrashed drive in the covers off Stokes that flew straight to Morgan.
