Accused drunken driver in California crash was deported 15 times

A Mexican man who'd been deported at least 15 times has pleaded not guilty to a drunken driving crash that badly injured a 6-year-old boy in San Diego. The 6-year-old boy, Lennox Lake, was hospitalized with serious injuries to his head.

The Lake family - Ben, Ingrid, and Lennox - was heading home from Disneyland.

A mother, father and their 6-year-old son were returning from a trip to Disneyland when, according to the survivors' family, a man in a pickup truck turned a corner, smashed into their vehicle and sped off.

Border patrol agents arrested the driver.

An alleged DUI hit-and-run that injured a young boy has become the latest rallying point for anti-immigrant and white nationalist groups after it was revealed that the man police believe is responsible for the crash was deported at least 15 times.

Banda-Acosta's arraignment is scheduled for Wednesday, and his bail has been set at $100,000, the San Diego Union-Tribune reported. His parents had minor injuries.

Lennox's mother, Ingrid Lake, found her son unconscious in his vehicle seat after the crash, bleeding from his nose and ears, and not breathing, the Daily Mail reports.

According to ICE, Banda-Acosta had been deported 15 times in recent years.

Immigration officials said the suspect has been returned to Mexico at least 15 times since 2002 for being in the US illegally, most recently in January.

Judge ordered the image of Constantino Banda-Acosta in court to be blurred.

Constantino Banda-Acosta, a 38-year-old Mexican citizen, was kicked out of the USA 15 times in the past 15 years, with his most previous deportation coming January 18, federal officials told The San Diego Union-Tribune.

Lauren Mack, spokeswoman for U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, said the agency would seek deportation for Banda-Acosta after any prison sentence is served. "We can't imagine our life without him", the boy's father said. Lake told paramedics he was fine.

Lake said his son's eyes were swollen shut until Tuesday night, when he was able to open them again. "[I hope] justice does their job and things work out the right way", said Lake.

A GoFundMe page to help the family with medical bills has quickly raised more than $40,000 and counting.

The woman told the station 10News her estranged husband was deported from the USA on or around January 10, but returned 10 days later.
