Wikipedia Co-Founder Launching 'Wikitribune' to Fight 'Fake News'

The credibility of news has recently come under scrutiny, with a number of "fake news" outlets circulating misleading content.

The Wikipedia co-founder is launching "Wikitribune", an open collaboration featuring professional and community journalists as well as other contributors creating fact-checked stories for the web.

In response, he has launched Wikitribune, a news site which will outsource key parts of the editorial process to volunteers and donors.

Wales hopes to raise money to pay journalists through a crowdfunding campaign.

The site will be run by journalists as well as a community of volunteers who will verify stories, Wales said in a video posted on the Wikitribune site today.

Wikitribune will cover news, United Kingdom and U.S. politics and science and technology, producing "fact-checked, global news stories".

The project is going to be crowdfunded, and in bringing together professional journalists with a community of supporters it aims to cover everything from politics to technology.

Following Monday's settlement, 1MDB said it will meet the obligations through liquidation of investment fund units. Najib has denied any wrongdoing, but the scandal sparked a mass rally in November against his government.

People have the option of becoming a monthly, quarterly or annual supporter and can also make a one-time contribution to Wales' effort.

"If you take a look at Wikipedia, it's noisy and not a flawless place, but for true fake news, there's been nearly no impact on the Wikipedia community".

Jeff Jarvis, a City University of NY journalism professor who is an advisor to the project, said in a blog post he is "excited" about WikiTribune, "I see the need for innovation around new forms of news", Jarvis said.

"In this messy age, we need new tools to distinguish truth from falsehood across the digital sprawl", Wales wrote in a Guardian column in February.

The majority of top news sites actually already have most of the elements that Wikitribune claims to bring to the audience. Accountability is going to be key, and there's a strong emphasis on presenting sources so readers will be able to see that facts have not been taken out of context or presented with bias. Wales is looking to initially employ ten people but told the BBC he'd "love to start with a lot more".

Since WikiTribune won't be allowing advertisements on their website, that means that they won't be chasing clicks and page views on their website, which means no click bait headlines and no sponsored content.
