The United States, Mexico and Canada on Monday announced a joint bid to stage the 2026 World Cup, aiming to become the first three-way co-hosts in the history of FIFA's showpiece tournament.
According to U.S. Soccer president Sunil Gulati, the 80-match World Cup would feature 60 matches in the United States of America, 10 in Mexico and 10 in Canada. Federation Internationale de Football Association meetings next month in Bahrain could provide greater clarity on the bidding process and timetable.
While the US remained front and centre during Monday's press event in New York City, Montagliani was asked to address Canada's lack of World Cup-ready venues.
U.S. Soccer Federation President Sunil Gulati immediately faced questions about the impact of Trump's stance toward Mexicans on staging one of the biggest events in sports as he presented the bid alongside his counterparts from Mexico and Canada in NY.
The U.S. will take the bulk of the tournament, with 60 of the 80 games in the United States of America.
The FC panel examine the arguments for and against a joint 2026 World Cup bid from the USA perspective. Canada put on a women's World Cup. Ultimately, this will still predominantly be a USA -led effort. Canada has hosted youth World Cups and the 2015 Women's World Cup. Of the six countries on Trump's current travel ban, Iran has qualified for three of the last five World Cups.
If North American is named the host site, it would mark the first time that soccer's showcase event was hosted by more than two countries.
H-1B visa program maxed out after four days
The number of applications received since the filing period began Monday has not been released yet. Last year, the US government received 236,000 visa petitions for FY 2017, a new record.
But, as Sunil Gulati said, it feels the bid is stronger with three countries on board, and it has the ability to bring the nations closer together, at a time when political relationships between the U.S. and Mexico are not strong.
Having pushed through his plan to expand the World Cup from 32 teams in January, Infantino is said to be supportive of joint bids.
With its stadiums and infrastructure, the United States could have gone about it alone and won the bid. Trump "is especially pleased that Mexico is a part of this bid", Gulati said.
The only other time the World Cup has been hosted by multiple countries was the 2002 tournament which was played in Japan and South Korea. All matches from the quarter-finals onward will be played in the US. That leaves Africa and South America as the only possible challengers to a CONCACAF bid.
Sunil Gulati, President of the United States Soccer Federation has said in a presser that there is strong encouragement from Donald Trump and hence there are no concerns.
At the press conference today, the president of U.S. Soccer felt compelled to say in his opening remarks what Trump thought of the bid.
The procedure will change for the 2026 World Cup with the entire Federation Internationale de Football Association membership, which stands at 211, having a vote. Technically FIFA will draw up a shortlist for its 211 member nations to vote in 2020 but that may end up being a formality.
