Unemployment rates fall to record lows in 4 US states

- State officials say North Carolina's seasonally adjusted unemployment rate dropped to 4.9 percent in March, a drop from 5.1 percent in the prior month.

The agency also says that the state added 3,000 construction jobs and 3,300 jobs in education and health services compared to the previous March.

Maine, Tennessee and Washington state reported the largest percentage job gains last month, while Missouri, New Jersey and Pennsylvania experienced the biggest cuts.

The United States' jobless rate declined two-tenths of a percentage point, from 4.7 percent in February to 4.5 percent in March. The EDD estimates the county had a labor force of 246,900, with 21,800 now unemployed.

The unemployment rate, Gov. Terry McAuliffe said, is the lowest it has been since May 2008 and is below the national rate. At 4.9 percent, the IL jobless rate stands at its lowest level since June 2007, after having decreased for two consecutive months.

Even though more Iowans were employed in March than 12 months before, the number of people in the state's labor force - those who are working and considered unemployed - dropped. The seasonally adjusted unemployment rate held steady at 3.1 percent, with current the employment level indicating 1,455,600 Utahns registered as gainfully employed.

When individuals stop looking for work, they are no longer considered unemployed for the objective of calculating the jobless rate.

New Mexico, for the third consecutive month, has the highest unemployment rate in the nation, while neighbor Colorado has the lowest rate, according to figures released by the federal government Friday. The March drop coupled with February's downward revised gain means that IL remains 19,600 jobs short of reaching its prior peak employment reached in September 2000.

However, the agency reported that 500 retail positions were lost during the month. "Our focus is on implementing a 2-year budget that reduces the overall tax burden on all Mainers and continues to promote this type of job growth". Its February 2017 unemployment rate was 7.8 percent.

Jobs in manufacturing rose by 2,600, with hiring in nondurable goods (3,700) more than offsetting losses in durable goods (1,100). Boise MSA followed with an increase of 3.5 percent, or 10,700 jobs.

The strong economy combined with eastern Idaho's relatively small population means employers are having to compete for highly skilled employees, driving up wages and other incentives in those areas, Morrow said.

Unemployment rates were lower than the statewide average in all three metro areas: Portland-South Portland (2.6 percent), Lewiston-Auburn (3.2 percent) and Bangor (3.4 percent).
