Trump welcomes to White House US aid worker freed from Egypt

President Trump met with Aya Hijazi on April 21, an Egyptian American charity worker who was imprisoned in Cairo for three years.

Aya Hijazi, a U.S. citizen, and her Egyptian husband Mohamed Hassanein were freed and flown back to the United States this morning.

"At the end of the day we're just pleased that she's back home ... and that the president and the team successfully worked to bring her back home", White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer said Friday.

Aya Hijazi, an Egyptian who holds USA citizenship, was acquitted by a Cairo court on Sunday along with seven others who had worked with street children.

Finally on Sunday, a court in Cairo dropped all charges against Hijazi and the others.

The charges were widely decried by worldwide human rights groups and the US government. She went on to found the Belady Foundation, an organization that aims to shelter and rehabilitate marginalized street children.

During his April visit to the US, Egypt's President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi said that he might be willing to give Hegazi a presidential pardon if she were convicted.

The release from an Egyptian prison last week of Aya Hijazi was a victory for President Donald Trump. Hijazi, an Egyptian-American charity worker was freed after almost three.

Trump sent a USA government aircraft to Cairo to bring Hijazi and her family to Washington, D.C. and after her arrival, she met with Trump at the White House.

Hijazi and her family reportedly returned to the US on Thursday night aboard a USA government plane. But as the Post points out, it wasn't until Trump moved to reset US relations with Egypt that Sissi considered releasing the group. "President Donald J. Trump". Among those on the couches were Ivanka Trump, the president's daughter; Jared Kushner, the president's son-in-law; and Dina Powell, a deputy national security adviser who traveled to Egypt this week.

Trump has vowed to work closely with Arab allies in the fight against the Daesh. And despite calls for her release, the Obama administration seemed to have little leverage with the Sissi regime to make it happen.
