Trump hails Italy for role in Libya, Iraq, Afghanistan

President Donald Trump said on Thursday he does not see a role for the United States in Libya apart from defeating Islamic State militants.

Gentiloni said, "We need a stable and unified Libya".

"I think they are doing a tremendous disservice to an agreement that was signed", Trump said.

Standing beside Italian Prime Minister Paolo Gentiloni at a White House news conference, Trump praised Italy's contributions to the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan and commended its efforts toward seeking stability in Libya.

"We don't know whether or not they're able to do that, but I have absolute confidence that he will be trying very, very hard", Trump said.

They'll discuss the Group of Seven industrialized nations meeting in Italy next month.

Gentiloni said Rome would abide by its commitments to increase defence spending under a North Atlantic Treaty Organisation agreement, despite budgetary constraints that have kept it from spending 2% of gross domestic product on defence.

Gentiloni, premier since December, was also expected to stress to Trump the need for burden-sharing in Europe's refugee crisis, given Italy's proximity to Libya, where large numbers of migrants take the risky voyage across the Mediterranean to reach Europe.

Exxon seeks OK to resume Russian oil venture
A Treasury representative said the department would not comment on individual licenses or waiver requests. Exxon spokesman Alan Jeffers said the company does not comment on ongoing discussions with regulators.

The president then shifted to talking about his meeting and understanding with China's president, Xi Jinping, who Trump has repeatedly stressed is a key player in solving the North Korean dilemma.

Trump comments come in advance of Sunday's presidential election in France, a contest that has high stakes for the future of the European Union.

And while Trump has said he has "never been for strong intervention" in the country, he has also asked campaign crowds why the United States hasn't been "bombing the hell out of" Libya and other countries in the throes of conflict with ISIS.

The White House said a day earlier that it would request an audience for Trump with Pope Francis, but details of a possible meeting have not been announced. He says he's not anxious about emboldening terrorists by saying an attack can have an impact on a democratic election.

Italian commentators said Trump appeared to have brushed aside Gentiloni's request for help.

As he often had during the presidential campaign, Trump ripped into the deal struck by Iran, the USA and other world powers in 2015, and said "it shouldn't have been signed". "We have to be strong and we have to be vigilant and I have been saying it for a long time".

The two leaders also took to their podiums as reports surfaced of an attack that killed one police officer and wounded another in Paris. We want to keep it going We feel confident that will happen, that we'll avoid a shutdown.
