A 17-year-old surfer has been killed after a shark attack in Australia.

Monday's attack happened at Kelp Beds, near Wylie Bay, in Esperance just before 4pm, police said.

The girl was taken in critical condition to Esperance Hospital, where she died. It's a little bit early.

Wylie Bay Beach has been closed until further notice and people have been advised to stay out of the area for 48 hours.

It was reported that the girl was pulled from the water unconscious and with obvious serious injuries. The Department of Fisheries was set to patrol the beach Tuesday.

Panic and chaos at New York Penn Station following NJ Transit delays
In a tweet Friday night, New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio reiterated that "no shots were fired at Penn Station" that evening. Two people were taken into custody for ignoring the officers' orders and one of them was tased.

According to Shark Smart WA, a shark-tracking site maintained by the Australian government, a medium-sized great white shark had been spotted in the area twice in the past week.

According to the outlet, the teen's mother and sisters were on the beach and witnessed the attack.

Kelp Beds, also known as "Kelpies", is a popular surf break in a remote area also used for camping and four-wheel driving.

Surfer Sean Pollard, then 23, lost his arm and his other hand in a shark attack at the same beach in 2014.

In June previous year, Doreen Collyer, 60, died after being attacked by a large great white shark while diving one kilometre off the Perth coast.
