Saints, Adrian Peterson Close To Reaching Terms On Contract

Rapoport cited sources saying that Peterson is closing in on a contract with the New Orleans Saints that would be worth approximately $3 million for the upcoming 2017 season.

That Week 1 trip to Minnesota for Monday Night Football will sure get a lot more dramatic in a hurry if Peterson wraps up the deal with New Orleans, as anticipated.

According to the Times Picayune, Peterson visited with the Saints two weeks ago, but he ended up leaving without a deal.

When the Minnesota Vikings signed running back Latavius Murray in free agency, they closed the door on the possible return of Adrian Peterson to the franchise.

In 2016, Peterson was hampered by injuries that limited him to just three games where he amassed only 72 yards on 37 carries. He also is convinced that the Saints aren't that far from being a competitive team, at least partially based on seven of last season's nine losses coming by six points or less.

Elsewhere • The Chiefs waived Jaye Howard with a failed physical designation after the defensive tackle was limited to eight games because of a hip injury last season.

For his career, Peterson has rushed for 11,747 yards and 97 rushing touchdowns.

New Orleans has 7 picks in this week's NFL Draft, including 5 in the first 3 rounds. That's good for them, but the Patriots were the ones who made the much bigger, better move for a running back on Monday. Hightower, who signed as a free agent in San Francisco this offseason, had 133 carries for 548 yards (4.1-yards per carry) and four touchdowns and 22 catches for 200 yards and one touchdown for New Orleans previous year. He signed with the San Francisco 49ers last week.

Instead, Tampa Bay will probably spend a draft pick on a running back later this week.

The Saints already have a 1,000-yard rusher, Mark Ingram, who totaled a career-high 1,043 yards last season.
