President To Order Review Of National Monuments

President To Order Review Of National Monuments

The review will be part of a wider look at the Antiquities Act -the law that allows presidents to set aside federal lands without congressional approval.

Also on Monday, the Utah-based Salt Lake Tribune reported that Trump is going to seek a review of all the national monument designations made by the last three US presidents, although it was unclear what such a review would lead to.

Republicans in ME, including Gov. Paul LePage, have asked Trump to stop national monument status for Katahdin Woods and Waters National Monument, an expansive piece of land that includes much of the Penobscot River watershed.

"I think Congress could, should repeal the Antiquities Act", LePage says, "or at least write it so a president cannot violate (it)".

Interior will review monuments that are 100,000 acres or more and will provide a recommendation to Trump in 120 days on which monuments should be rescinded or modified.

Former President Barack Obama designated 1.35 million acres surrounding the twin buttes known as Bears Ears just before leaving office.

"I'm here today to support the monument and my 3-year-old son", Waggoner said on a conference call with reporters organized by a pro-Obama group. The order could lead to the reshaping of roughly 30 national monuments that were designated by Presidents Bill Clinton, George W. Bush and Barack Obama after 1996.

Administration officials on Monday confirmed the expected moves. The National Parks Conservation Association has retained a legal analysis that concludes President Trump couldn't unilaterally abolish a national monument.

Saints, Adrian Peterson Close To Reaching Terms On Contract
In 2016, Peterson was hampered by injuries that limited him to just three games where he amassed only 72 yards on 37 carries. According to the Times Picayune , Peterson visited with the Saints two weeks ago, but he ended up leaving without a deal.

"It's a crock that grazing is the issue here", Wallin said, adding that if there are grazing restrictions, they could be because of a drought, overuse or other reasons not related to a monument designation. "I'm not scared of getting sued", he said.

The monuments the Trump administration will review include Grand Canyon-Parashant National Monument, Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument and Basin and Range National Monument, as well as a host of Pacific Ocean monuments, including the World War II Valor in the Pacific National Monument.

"This is yet another example of Washington thinking it knows what's best for Western communities", Bennet said. Molly Block, a spokeswoman for Utah Republican Rep. Rob Bishop, told The Daily Caller News Foundation.

"While the details are still emerging, it is clear that these reviews are a thinly veiled attempt to appease industry and sell off our national parks, public lands, oceans and cultural heritage to the highest bidder", said Christy Goldfuss, the Center for American Progress Action Fund's vice president for energy and environment policy.

Lands such as the Grand Staircase, Organ Mountains, and Bears Ears are among the most spectacular and are cherished by millions.

While the Stonewall National Monument, designated as such in June 24, 2016, the first to honor the LGBTQ rights struggle, was not named by the official as a concern. Utah's statewide leaders are united in their opposition to the monument, and the legislature has passed a resolution asking that Trump to take some sort of action.
