After some sad news, the Minnesota Vikings offered some kind words about the career of Pittsburgh Steelers owner Dan Rooney. With more females wanting to coach or be in positions in the National Football League, this rule expanded for women to get roles in the field.
Under Rooney's direction, the Steelers won four Super Bowls in a six-year span in the 1970s to go along with many other accomplishments that has made the franchise among the NFL's best today. The Steelers had already fulfilled their Rooney Rule requirement by interviewing Ron Rivera, a minority candidate of Hispanic descent, prior to Tomlin's meeting with the Steelers, and weren't required to give Tomlin considerations. "The Rooney's are a royal family in the National Football League, and Dan more than capably followed in the footsteps of his father, Art, a league founder". Dan's dedication to the game, to the players and coaches, to his beloved Pittsburgh, and to Steelers fans everywhere was unparalleled.
Daniel Milton Rooney was born in Pittsburgh on July 20, 1932, a year before the Steelers entered the still-fledgling NFL.
Rooney's first job with the Steelers, a team his family has controlled since 1933, was as a water boy at age 12 and he began working in the front office after he graduated from Duquesne University in 1955.
Dan Rooney was and will remain one of the most respected owners in this league. More than that, he was a pivotal part of the league's success as a whole.
