Meet Mike Conaway, GOP Congressman Now Overseeing House's Russia Probe

The ranking Democrat on the intelligence committee, Rep. Adam B. Schiff (Calif.), commended Nunes for stepping down "in the best interests of the committee, and I respect that decision".

The House Intelligence Chairman got himself embroiled in a farcical affair, when he rushed to the White House to "brief" President Donald Trump and his associated that he was under surveillance by U.S. intelligence agencies during the transition.

EWING: Well, he says he's been made the subject of a complaint in the House Ethics Committee, specifically that he may have released classified information as he was talking about this information he learned about from the Trump White House. He called the charges false and politically motivated and are being leveled just as the American people are beginning to learn the truth about the improper unmasking of the identities of USA citizens and other abuse of power.

The House Ethics Committee is investigating whether Nunes may have made an unauthorized disclosure of classified information last month during a hastily arranged news conference.

Jane Harman, a former top House Intelligence Democrat who is now president of the Wilson Centre think tank, said she hoped the committee could "overcome the paralysis" gripping the investigation. Rep. Conaway with help from Rep. Trey Gowdy of SC and Rep. Tom Rooney of Florida, will temporarily take charge of the investigation, said Speaker Paul Ryan.

"I look forward to my continued work with the Chairman on the whole host of other important issues that our committee oversees every day", he said in a statement.

"We're going to conduct the investigation and I'm looking forward to working with my colleagues on both sides of the aisle to pursue every lead", he said.

And House members are leaving town for a more-than-two-week Easter recess starting Thursday.

Motives for North Korea's latest missile test
The North is banned from any missile or nuclear tests by the United Nations , though it has repeatedly broken those sanctions. North Korea has fired a ballistic missile into the Sea of Japan, according to South Korea and the USA military.

Inskeep: If [Nunes] recuses himself, he remains chairman, and so that part of his work is taken over by Mike Conaway of Texas, I guess, who's the number two guy - or Peter King of NY who's the number three guy.

The California Republican alerted the White House of his decision Thursday morning, a senior administration official told CNN.

At the time, his fellow House Intelligence Committee member Joaquin Castro laughed off the statement.

Taking the House seriously, Democratic Congressmen - and a few Republicans - called on Nunes to "recuse himself" from the investigation.

That evidence, first revealed by Nunes two weeks ago, has become the center of its own power struggle in the Russian Federation investigation - with Democrats accusing the White House of withholding that intelligence from them.

As multiple investigations into Russia's meddling have gained steam, the Trump administration and its allies in Congress have accused Former president Barack Obama's administration of seeking names of U.S. citizens caught up in surveillance of foreign nationals for political purposes.

"Pavlich observed that Nunes refused to step aside when "[Sen.] Chuck Schumer called for his resignation [and] [Rep.] Nancy Pelosi called for his resignation". "You don't hear the Democrats screaming and saying one word about that".

Mr Obama and his aides have flatly denied doing so.

Two of the four people who signed the March 28 letter alleging ethics violations served as White House counsels in Republican and Democratic administrations.
