Hull survive Niasse dismissal to beat Watford

Elsewhere Hull City managed to overcome Watford by 2-0 at the KC Stadium to remain two points above the 17th-placed Swansea, with five games to go.

Spaniard Quique Sanchez Flores guided Watford to an FA Cup semi-final and an impressive 13th on the club's return to the Premier League last season, but was still given his marching orders.

While for Hull they are in a fight of their own and are just two points above the relegation zone.

"We weren't very lucky with injuries and despite all this we are 10th".

The KCOM erupted and the home fans had barely calmed down when Clucas smashed home Hull's second goal nine minutes later.

But only now we are more familiar with Marco Silva's incredible home record, and his ability to organise a team to play above their station, has he started to receive the overdue credit he deserves.

But all that was turned on its head in the 25th minute when, to the disbelief of the home crowd, referee Madley produced a straight red card for apparent unsafe play after Niasse's challenge on M'Baye Niang. Ten years ago it would have been written off as a "striker's challenge" but not today, and Niasse was probably foolish to give the referee a decision to make. "They are good players, they never lose organisation and we need to be calm tomorrow and be patient to do good things and put problems on the opponent". The impact was minimal and Niasse was left wide-eyed in shock at the sight of a red card while Silva, normally calm, ranted to the fourth official.

The Portuguese's copybook in his own back yard in unblemished by defeat in his last 40 games, and his arrival has lifted Hull after they looked nearly certain for relegation at the turn of the year.

Etienne Capoue's close-range effort was kept out by Jakupovic early in the second half, but Hull snatched the lead in the 62nd minute. Miguel Angel Britos had the best chances, twice steering headers wide of the mark from corners.

While Mazzarri is delighted with his side's recent efforts, he says the sense of safety may lead to a lack of intensity he is eager to avoid. We should have scored at least one or two goals. The response from the home players was, in many ways, exemplary though - as they ended up easing to a win.

But the Tigers' fortunes have rapidly improved under new manager Marco Silva - particularly at home in which they have won five of the six matches in which he has been in charge.
