Elisabeth Moss Tells A New Tale

Elisabeth Moss Tells A New Tale

When they slaughtered Congress, we didn't wake up. When they blamed terrorists and suspended the Constitution, we didn't wake up either. I don't want to step on the DP's toes. As the story unfolds, she remembers how the world turned to hell, the United States turning into a land where there is no Congress, no Constitution, no individuality - just a totalitarian Gilead where every man and woman serves a given goal, all "broken" individuals being quietly disposed of. Because she is a fertile woman, she is forced to have sex with the "commander" Fred and conceive his baby.

Designated by their bonnets and red dresses, they are kept under an ever-watchful eye. All of this has happened somewhere in the world - these are things humans have done or experienced somewhere. Some of the music is used for ironic purposes - Simple Minds' "Don't You Forget About Me" is used well with a scene between Offred and Nick, the Commander's driver.

But, beginning this week, she will have a prominent role in the dystopian The Handmaid's Tale, a series made primarily by bringing to life a universe created by Margaret Atwood that feels strikingly prescient in today's political climates. She calls it speculative fiction.

JEFFREY BROWN: Atwood mixed elements of totalitarian systems of the past, including the Soviet system, and strains of American life, from the Puritans to the rise of the Christian right in the 1980s.

The 311-page novel was a rousing success, captured several awards, and has never been out of print. Offred, the main character, is set to be portrayed by Elisabeth Moss. A handmaid wouldn't get far. It's those other escapes, the ones you can open in yourself, given a cutting edge or a twisted sheet and chandelier.

In order to let viewers know what Offred is feeling, Moss relies on the subtlest twitches and micro-expressions to capture the handmaid's tormented inner life while maintaining her outward façade of compliancy.

Executive producer Bruce Miller knew Bledel's work from "Gilmore Girls" and "Mad Men" [she played Beth Dawes], while his daughter loved Bledel's work on the big screen in the "Traveling Pants" movies.

Much of the poetry and symbolism in The Handmaid's Tale /em is written into the story itself, but it would be nothing without the devastating bravery of Elizabeth Moss' performance. It's a handsome world. "She didn't want to and then Lizzie was like, 'No, really hit me'". It's Stranger Things good.

You may believe that The Handmaid's Tale /em isn't "your thing" - and that makes sense. It's just a awful reality.

Miller: I'm not anxious.

ELISABETH MOSS: Both. I thought about it a lot. A 'pious sh*t.' But she spends the whole first episode trying to figure out if Offred is someone she can trust. And many of our department heads, our wardrobe and production designer. What kind of show would we be making?

Opinions on whether the heat is rising in America following the election of Donald Trump in November may vary. "It's important that we all do look up from our phones and take notice". "I think as a woman who would want to have a child. when you suddenly have to hand that responsibility off to somebody else and watch it happening, that's really hard".

Their interests were other.

"It's another huge right taken away, which is the right to privacy", Moss says.

JEFFREY BROWN: That's not very hopeful. Atwood explained in a series of tweets that while the cast of the series is pro-feminist, the actors are also aware that there are those for whom it the word conjures negative connotations.

JEFFREY BROWN: But you can write the future. Then I [had] to just walk away. I am to make myself clean, washed and brushed like a prize pig. "So that's going to be a surprise to some people, too".

Warning: the following contains spoilers for the first three episodes of The Handmaid's Tale: "Offred", "Birth Day", and "Late". After that, episodes will come out weekly.

JUDY WOODRUFF: And we have more online.

There is a renewed interest in the 1985 book a Handmaid's Tale by Margaret Atwood.
