Derek Jeter has interest in acquiring Marlins

Jeter is among three rumored groups looking to purchase the franchise, which has finished no higher than third place in the NL East since re-branding to the Miami Marlins prior to 2012.

When asked about the Fox report, and the possibility of Jeter owning a franchise, current Marlins Manager Don Mattingly praised the former Yankee shortstop, telling the ESPN that Jeter has always aspired to be an owner, preferring that to the life of a coach.

"The thing that I'm interested in is making the game grow", Jeter said. "But I know he loves the game".

The former Bombers captain could be a huge success for a team that has basically operated in the dark the past 15 years under Loria.

NY businessmen Joshua Kushner - brother of President Donald J. Trump's son-in-law - was part of a previous group in discussions to buy the team. That deal apparently fell apart with still more reports that the Trump administration was considering Loria for an ambassadorship to France. Under Loria, the Marlins have won one World Series title, in 2003 ironically against the Yankees, according to Christian Red of the New York Daily News.

The Miami Marlins play tonight against the Nationals at Nationals Park in Washington, D.C. "You keep winners around, just like they're doing with Magic Johnson over there (as the Los Angeles Lakers' new president)".

Wall Street executive and former Morgan Stanley brokerage chief Gregory Fleming is representing Jeter in "talks" with Marlins President David Samson, Fox Business reported.

"There's obviously a lot of buzz - there are rumors", Samson said. "Time will always tell what happens".

Now the club is talking to a handful of suitors about buying the franchise from Loria, who has owned the team since 2002.

Mattingly said they speak about once a year. "And if that's the case, I wish him the best of luck". A spokeswoman for Romney said "Mitt Romney is not involved in an effort to buy the Marlins".
