Dalai Lama arrives in Assam, stresses emotional attachment to state

China should refrain from meddling in the internal affairs of India, Union Minister Kiren Rijiju on Saturday said after Beijing objected to the Dalai Lama's visit to Arunachal Pradesh next week. He spoke at a function organized by an Indian newspaper in Gauhati, the capital of Assam state.

The trip by the Dalai Lama, whom the Chinese regard as a unsafe separatist, is expected to ratchet up tensions between New Delhi and Beijing over strategic issues such as China's growing ties with India's arch-rival Pakistan.

India has confirmed its bid to send Dalai Lama along with its representatives to argue for India's membership in the Nuclear Suppliers Group in its next plenary to be held in the Bern in June.

"Dalai Lama is not just a religious figure but also a political one and his visit has been strongly opposed already by our government", Mr Ma added, "We believe that this kind of activity goes against the promise made by the Indian government regarding the activities by people from China's Tibet".

"I came to India in 1959 as a refugee".

"I still feel the feeling of that time", he said.

"China on Thursday expressed hope that India will take "effective measures" on the Dalai Lama's "activities" and cancel his proposed visit to Arunachal Pradesh next month". We have to apply our intelligence to be compassionate.

"There should be efforts to reach out to these elements, calm down their minds and gradually win them over through love and compassion", the Dalai Lama said. "The Dalai Lama is a religious leader and no political meaning needs to be to attached to his activity", Gopal Baglay said.

Maintaining that the religion and faith alone will not herald peace, the spiritual leader, "We must encourage individuals to debate, raise questions, investigate, analyse, create a strong platform of dialogue to solve problems for peace".
