What started out as an entertaining pitcher's duel ended up getting out of hand for our Braves once the bullpen entered, as a disastrous seventh inning ended up being more than enough for the Mets to claim a 6-0 victory on Opening Day.
Noah Syndergaard did not come out for the seventh, a blister to his right middle finger bursting after six innings of rise-to-the-occasion brilliance.
Manager Terry Collins said that Syndergaard only felt bothered by the blister after that sixth inning as it popped during the inning.
"And I saw this guy in the minor leagues just do tremendous damage in left-center field". He isn't anxious about the blister, although it affects all his pitches.
"It's not very big".
"He's going to miss some time with his elbow", Collins said. They'll dry it out the next couple days.
On opening day, Julio Teheran continued his dominance against the New York Mets. NY scored all of their runs in the bottom of the seventh inning of off four Braves relievers. The only notable player who is no longer with the squad is Smith who, despite hitting just.238 with three home runs and 22 RBI across 72 games, still stole 16 bases and showed promise as an outfielder. Despite a last-place finish in the NL East a year ago, the Braves have won six straight games at Citi Field - sweeping their final two series there in 2016.
Chaz Roe relieved Ian Krol (0-1) and walked Yoenis Cespedes, loading the basis.
Asdrubal Cabrera hit a single to centerfield with Wilmer Flores trying to score from second.
From there, the Mets stayed disciplined in the batter's box and built a comfortable lead. Atlanta will play three games against the Pittsburgh Pirates and two against the Miami Marlins before returning home to officially open SunTrust Park against the San Diego Padres on Friday, April 14, at 7:35 p.m.
Bilic: Antonio to return vs Arsenal; Sakho could as well
In an exclusive in this morning's Sunsport , West Ham United are preparing a summer move for England midfielder Jack Wilshere. The Frenchman has led the Gunners to a top-four spot and Champions League qualification for the past 20 seasons.
After Syndergaard exited the game, Hansel Robles got the Braves in order in his first appearance of the season in the seventh inning. He walked three and struck out six batters.
Topped only by the one that came after he left the game, by the release of the tension that had gripped the building in the best imaginable way.
After using his four-seam fastball and sinker at almost equal rates for the most of the season, Syndergaard all but abandoned his four-seamer in the NL Wild Card Game.
While a blister is more of an annoyance as opposed to an injury, the Mets obviously elected to play it safe to begin the 2017 regular season.
Hart first signed 42-year-old knuckleballer and former NL Cy Young Award victor R.A. Dickey to a one-year, $7.5 million contract that includes an $8 million option for 2018. "Bartolo had a huge effect on this team". "It was great. I was nervous - and that was an awesome feeling".
The Mets offense didn't put up any runs early on for Syndergaard to get the win, unfortunately. Atlanta is also 5-2 in Teheran's last seven starts, and 4-13 in their last 17 Monday games. Your team is going to be good because your team can hit and your team has decent pitching. Cabrera is on the 10-day disabled list, retroactive to March 30, with a right elbow strain.
The reaction was similar to Syndergaard's response a year ago when he bristled over the incessant speculation about a bone spur in his right elbow.
The two teams will face off again Wednesday after a scheduled off day Tuesday.
The Braves needed some experience to guide their young roster this season, and Hart did not waste time in adding three big names that helped both the starting rotation and the lineup.
What Manager John Farrell said has impressed him most about 22-year-old during his short time in the majors is the lack of panic.
